Funding & Rate Study
The estimated cost of the HMLP Reliability Project is currently between $100 million and $110 million, although the estimate may change as engineering, permitting, and project planning progress. The project is expected to be financed through a combination of HMLP reserves and long-term borrowing, with any required bonding subject to approval by Hingham Town Meeting.
Because HMLP is a customer-owned municipal electric utility, the project will not be funded through Town tax dollars, and utility borrowing for the project will not affect the Town's borrowing capacity for other municipal capital projects.
HMLP is currently conducting a standard three year comprehensive rate study. One component of this study will be to evaluate the potential impact of the HMLP Reliability Project on future electric rates. The study will help inform long-term financial planning for HMLP and determine how project costs can be managed while continuing to provide safe, reliable electric service. Information about the study's findings and any resulting rate impacts will be shared once the analysis is complete. Customers can listen and participate in the rate study process by joining HMLP's public board meetings.
